I'll give you the bad news first. My lovely wee kitten died when we moved house. I found her dead behind the fridge. I'm not sure what happened. She had been happy and full of life, exploring the new house. She may have got an electric shock. I was gutted and for me it represented life in Malawi, short and sweet. Malawians have lots of children, if one dies they have another one. True to form my house girl brought me another kitten on Friday. I had not decided to have another one but the decision was taken from me. This one, Harry, is very cute and is probably about 6 weeks old. He is very well behaved at present and is already practising his hunting and killing techniques. We are becoming good friends and I'm trying to make the house as safe as possible.
I moved house on Monday, I got a bed from the college, a matress and 2 chairs from Debbie, my neighbour, and I should get my furniture in a couple of weeks. I've bought crockery and cutlery and other bits and pieces but my star buy was a wooden toilet seat! Last weekend I managed to buy 2 ply toilet paper so I'm sitting in the lap of luxury, perhaps I should have put an "H" in sitting. The other real luxury I got was bacon. I've not seen it before or since then and I'm still salivating at the thought of it. Still no shoes from home but I live in hope. Back to the house its a 3 bedroomed house with a large garden. I've managed to clear most of the overgrown areas and I'm going to get a fence built round it. I've planted my herbs in pots, bought a hose and sprinkler and hope to get planting soon.
I've been continuing to work at the mental hospital and later this week I have a VSO meeting at the lake. I know its a tough job but someone has to go to the lake.
Keep in touch.

Hi Carol, Sounds like you need your PAT testing done I will send out the Sparky. Poor wee cat hopefully Harry will be ok and get to work on the mice etc. Had a night at my sister's near Aberdeen and I was telling Sophie all about your trip, she thinks you are very brave and a good person....when she is older I will enlighten her. Was at a study day in the ARI the best thing about it was the fire alarm went off and we got to see the nice firemen it went to rat poo after that. Weather still awful we go away for the week on saturday in the holiday bus so checking out the weather up north and Northumberland as well. Will get back to you soon. Take care and good luck with the garden. Enjoy the lake. LOL Rhona xxx
Hi Carol,
That's so sad about the kitten. Niamh wondered if you had a wee funeral for it.....asked if you said some words and sang a hymn! I'm sure you did say some words but they might not have been that holy!!!Anyway, I hope you're looking after yourself. Will your address change when you get your house? Will you have internet access there (obviously it'll be dial up but at least it woud be there). The mental hospital sounds dire. It's hard to imagine having to work in that sort of environment, certainly puts things in perspective here for a wee while. Anyway take care, will send another airmail soon!

Hi again Carol
Stay away from behind the fridge!!
I expect you are looking forward to the freedom and luxury of your new car soon. How did your meeting with VSO, Scotsman rep and photographer go? and did your shampoo arrive intact ? With being away I am not sure if I have missed a write up and the only thing I have seen this week is about a local girl raising money and going to Malawi soon. We had a lovely holiday in the sun and have sent you a postcard. Maybe Rhiannon can do some photos for you to download .Ian had a great birthday over 2 nights while we were away and took a cake with his photo on ( 25 years old for before and after effect ) to the office and seemingly someone saw a resemblance to George Clooney !! must get some of their wine. Are you able to do photos of your house and local scenes ? Have remembered your note about blankets for the babies. I and some of my friends have loads of odd wool and could also do something for you if that would help so let me know. Love Helen xxx
Dear Carol, so sorry to hear about the kitty, hopefully it was quick, but don't you go poking behind the fridge!!! Well only 9 days to go before I head off to sunny climes, can't wait, it sems to have taken forever to come around. I'll no sooner arrive then I'll be heading home again. I hope Harry settles in quickly and gets down to the job in hand - killing the mice etc.The town is very busy right now with the festival crowds so I don't go up unless I have to. I'll have to phone John soon and see if he wants to do another lunch. Hope you get settled into your new house soon and get the garden into shape with your herbs, etc. Well Carol will have to go for now as I have to get the dinner on the go but I will write again soon, possibly after my holiday. Till then, take care and try not to work too hard!! Lots of love Elsie xxxxx
Hi Carol, Glad you are settling in. Loving reading your emails, they are so funny, although it was very sad about your wee kitty. Your cats at home seem to be keeping a low profile, I think they know there are two collies next door! Hall is delighted that you are now taking up gardening, you can swap notes when you return. Not had many boozy neighbours nights since you left and it will get even less as Gordon and Lesley are moving house. Keep up the good work and we'll keep in touch. Take care. Hall & Mary xxx
