Food Cravings

Having managed without chocolate, wine and meat for 6 weeks I cracked and bought a chicken. I thought it was worth risking African tummy again and I've always got the immodium at hand now. It was the best chicken I've ever had. Once the smell of roasting chicken came from the oven I could hardly contain myself and wait for it to cook properly. Its the best meal I've had since I've been here. The chicken curry I had on the 2 following days was not bad either. The next step might be goat. I'm trying to convince myself it will be like lamb. I'll let you know. Its bacon butties I really miss.

I was offered a new house. Not quite what I was expecting. Outside loo, shower and kitchen and on the other side of the wall from the mortuary which would have given me plenty opportunity to share every one's grief. Life is hard enough here without that so I rejected it in writing and was offered a decent house within 2 days. I can't move in for a month but that's OK. I'm really looking forward to getting my garden going and growing and getting some chickens. I don't know if I'll be happy about putting my own chickens in the pot but they better watch out if I have a midnight munchies. I've also had a kitten offered and I should be able to get it after my next course in Lilongwe. So I'm getting organised and should soon be really settled.

Orientation continues but I've only a few days left. After the Lilongwe course I should be able to get on with my job. I tried to use the new Internet cafe last week. The first place in Zomba to have WiFi unfortunately its slower than dial up and I didn't manage to log into my web page. I've also visited Blantyre where they have a couple of good shops that almost fool you into thinking that you are in Europe and you can get ice cream in an almost decent cafe.

Many thanks for all the kind offers of sending things out. I think I'm OK just now. JB has sent several parcels, all containing shoes, but they have not arrived yet. Once I'm properly in post there may be things that I'll need for work. Thanks too for all the comments its great to hear from everyone. Hope Tessa gets on well. Keep in touch.

You must be like a stick insect by now. Good to hear you on line again- you will glad to get settled into your own place and to get planting. Suddenly we have had 4 days with no rain, I even had to water the garden!

Hi Carol,
Sorry I missed your departure but it was good to read about your exploits. The going sounds rough but I know you will revel in the challenges each day is sure to bring. I will miss being able to contact you for assistance but wish you a great experience. Just think you will be able to write your memoirs when you get back.
All the Best for now.
Love Norma (shanley)

Hi Carol, Good to hear all your news and I am sure the patients are very very glad to see you.
We know you like challenges and new experiences so the food and drink won't be a problem for long and you can have a new string to your bow with a cook book. Have looked at goat and it's amazingly healthy and versatile e.g. roast, braise -shame about the wine--curry, kebab and burgers. Just make sure you don't get a rutting male as seemingly they smell !!! no surprise there then. When no choc, just look for carob beans and chew a few then when in your own place you can start home brew. You can then invite the priest for supper and , better still, he might bring some wine.
John has probably mentioned our trip to Lanarkshire but nothing gained.
JT and Helen due back at weekend from Dolomites and JU met Queen and Philip here at bike club last week and we are off to Peebles on Sat.
I read article recently that a couple are requesting footballs, strips and equipment for Malawi which sounds good but don't know when they expect to send them.

Love Helenxx

Hi Carol, great to hear from you again! Niamh and I have been enjoying a lovely crop of strawbs from the strawberry pot! Mike and I have gone all "Good Life" with our veg patch... you can't beat your own lettuce and spring onions..just a shame that we had to eat 500 radishes in a week! (i'm sure we'll get the hang of succession planting next year!!!)I've sent you a letter and about to send you another one so hope you'll get them soon. Take care Lesley & co

Hi Carol, have spent ages trying to remember my password and finally remembered I'd used carolinmalawi to make it easy to remember! Didn't work of course as it's taken about 3 weeks to pop in to my dusty brain.

Will write to you this weekend as I'm sure you'll enjoy receiving letters.

By the way, thanks for recommending Dobbies to me - I bought some lovely strawberries and cream there the first time I visited, and the second, and the third.............. goat curry sounds equally delicious of course :)
love Angie

I couldn't believe it that I found out from you in Malawi that Tootsies has closed. It shows the last time I got out.

Had a great Las Vegas holiday. Th egood thing about being such a lush is that most people think their holiday fades away very quickly. Cheryl and I are just remembering things now!!

How are we to recognise you if the best thing on your menu is protein!

Speak with you soon

Hi Carol,
2nd go - my 1st message disappeared - hate technology sometimes. Good news about the kitten - that will be great fun and company too. Our chicks are getting big, and now got piglets. Not worked out how to send them out to you, as you could then have your own bacon butties! Give some thought to some goodies you would like sent out, and we might manage to send them in time for Christmas.
Have fun and keep safe, Jeanxxxxxxx

Hi Carol, Better late than never cottoning on to the comment page!Great to read your messages, you sound positively stoical in the face of adversity - quite the pioneer.I'm led to believe that goat is extremely tasty, especially if young, so should be something to look forward to.I have just posted off a letter to you, sorry to hear that despite going by air it's likely to take a month. When my dauchter Kirsty was away in Borneo she said how much she loved to get letters because you can take them out to read again and are not dependant on an internet link. Look out for the Harry Potter stamps on the envelope, you might be able to barter them for a chicken!! Take care Carol, your growing fan base are all behind you (mainly 'cause we're too timid to be right out there with you!). love Fiona D

Hi Carol
Finally managed to find your site(better late than never!). Great to hear how you're getting on - as I'm reading I can hear your voice and see you, but as Rhona said, there's maybe not much left to see!! Glad you didn't take me to any of those "dry" hotels on our trips to London! Hope all well with you.
Take care love Jude x
